Just like our friends at the Ghandigram Orphanage in India, we needed a
simple way to water our new garden. In India, the method is much more large
scale, where large pits are dug (several metres deep) to collect the infrequent
rainfall and the pits are then covered to prevent the water evaporating. Water
is then collected from these pits throughout times of drought so that their
garden can be watered and they have dug several pits in and around their garden
site.
Our system is similar, however we also have a nearby outdoor tap, supplying
fresh water whenever it is required. We also asked our builder to 're-route' the
guttering so that any water falling onto the hall roof now collects in our new
water butt, positioned near the centre of the garden. We expect this system to
work very well, especially if this year continues to be so wet! Here are some
