Pupil Premium Allocation, Use and Impact on Attainment

The DFE has recently benchmarked money that comes into school as Pupil Premium and the DfE expects this money to support pupils who are currently on Free School Meals or have had Free School Meals within the past 6 years. This Pupil Premium is used to support pupils’ attainment and achievement in a variety of ways that historically at Chad Vale  has been shown to be successful in ensuring that there is not an attainment gap between children eligible for Free School Meals and their peers.

The pupil premium can be used for, and has in the past been used to support the cost of One to One (121) tuition, residential trips, curriculum trips, creative clubs after school and sports clubs after school. The school’s finance department has set a Pupil Premium cost centre that will journal the costs and uses of the pupil premium and this information assists the Head Teacher and Governors to monitor the impact that the Pupil Premium has had on maintaining and raising standards.

Parents who need the assistance of the pupil premium are supported discreetly and no child or family is publicly identified. Discussions between the Head Teacher and the family are discreet and private.

The Government through Ofsted and the local authority monitors the use of the Pupil Premium and expects the school to be able to show that the Premium is supporting FSM families to reach National expectations in reading writing and mathematics and that it removes financial barriers that may impede the social and academic progress a child could make.

Pupil Premium Predictions 2013-14

Based on historical data it is predicted that through the interventions provided by pupil premium this year, pupils eligible for FSM will achieve in line with non-FSM pupils and will exceed national expectations.

Impact of Pupil Premium 2012-13

We had an average of 25% FSM pupils in each class last year and in Y6, 30%. There were no children classed as ‘looked after’ (CLA).

The use of pupil premium funding ensured that;

Overall, in Y6, FSM pupils achieved a value-added score of 100, slightly higher than national scores

In Maths, in Y6, FSM pupils achieved in line with national scores and above those pupils in school not eligible for FSM. 75% of FSM pupils achieved expected progress.

In Reading, in Y6, FSM pupils achieved a value added score of 100.6, compared to 99.7 nationally. They also outperformed our non-FSM pupils. 100% of FSM pupils achieved expected progress.

In Writing, in Y6, FSM met national value added scores and outperformed our non-FSM pupils. 88% of FSM pupils achieved the expected progress.

A higher percentage of our FSM Y6 pupils achieved level 4 and above than our non-FSM pupils.

(From the 8 pupils eligible for FSM in Y6, 1 was School Action Plus, 3 were EAL (one of whom joined Chad Vale in July of Y5 and was at an early stage of learning English). 1 pupil attended Chad Vale previously for a year spanning Y1/2 and returned in the summer term of Y4.)
