The work begins, all hands to the shovels, picks and pitchforks!

Over the day 40 Hammonds and Chad Vale Primary staff will work towards a common goal, most start very early at 8.30 a.m. and begin their immense challenge to transform the school banks into magical areas for learning and reflection. Nearly a thousand pounds worth of flowers, plants trees and shrubs are to be planted, benches to be constructed and painted, slabs to be removed and new slabs laid.

The television cameras arrive, interviews and actions follow. After scrumptious ‘bacon butties’ the gallant workers buckle down again. Benches are moved, trenches dug, soil turned, slabs removed, steps dug out and ground levelled.

We’re nearly half way there but await the cement and shingle. Beds have been readied, bases prepared, areas secured and levelled ready for the big push to completion. So after a hearty lunch prepared by Anita Bonner we’re off again – to the finish!

The cement and shingle has arrived and we can start to lay the foundations for the benches and the ‘big tree’ area. Is it going to rain or snow? We hope not and off we go…

Now we are on the last leg, it’s well past 5.00 p.m. and though it tried to snow the beauty of the project was too much and the weather changed its mind! The benches are now constructed and set, the paths laid, the fences fixed and cement mixed and laid. It looks incredible, only 9 hours ago the slopes were bare!
